Will you ride an electric Harley?

Photo from: www.treehugger.com

Below are snippets from two interesting articles about the possible future of motorcycles as we know it.

“Following a long tradition of hog choppers, Mr. Vogel has replaced the gas engine with ten car batteries. With 5 speeds and 78 horsepower, the bike can do 70 – 75 mph according to its inventor. A glimpse at the Vogelbilt website might disappoint those hoping the first electric Harley is a prototype, coming soon to a dealer near you, because Vogelbilt’s main focus is biodiesel. But Carl Vogel has told the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel that he wants to start producing electric motorcycles by 2007. The MJS site also offers a link to video from the Discovery Channel for those interested to see the bike in action. Or worth a look if you want to see a man with cheese on his head riding a motorcycle! The bike can also be set up with a side car generator (fueled by biodiesel, what else?) which can recharge the batteries underway.” ~ Read full article from www.treehugger.com »

Another recent article about Electric or Hydrogen powered Harley-Davidson® motorcycles:

“Would you fire up an electric Wide Glide? How about a hydrogen powered Fat Boy? Is there a hybrid Cross Bones in your future?

Not this season, but don’t dismiss the possibility that sooner than you think, you could put on your leathers and take a day ride on an alternative-powered bike.

Over these past few weeks in the pages of the motorcycle popular media and on the floor of the International Motorcycle show in Chicago, we’re seeing more sincere attempts at fielding motorcycles powered by something other than gasoline.

Several smaller manufacturers have rolled out electric powered bikes, with either batteries or hydrogen fuel cells as an energy source. Heavyweight Honda is promising a viable electric bike by 2010—and almost nobody doubts Big Red’s engineering capability to do so.

So far, these first attempts fall short in two areas US bikers check off as “must haves”—power and range. The biggest of the current (no pun intended) attempts run the rough equivalent of 500cc and have a range of about 125-150 miles—then need 8 hours to recharge.

With these limitations, today the most likely candidates for alternative bikes are the lighter scooters, dirtbikes, and a sportbike or two, so that’s where the first efforts are materializing.

With these limitations, with gasoline prices that have fallen back to only moderately painful levels, with sales down and profits off, and with more traditional consumers making up the bulk of their markets, it’s easy to see why neither Milwaukee nor the manufacturers of the “New American Motorcycle” have yet to join the race for an alternative-fuel bike.

“Potato-potato-potato” clearly isn’t going to be replaced by “hummmmmm” any time soon.

But never say never. The future probably doesn’t hold flying cars, but it does hold electric powered two and four wheeled vehicles just as surely as the internal combustion engine horsepower replaced the four-legged variety. The question is not will we tour or cruise on electric powered machines, but when?” ~ Read full article from www.examiner.com »
