Riding Motorcycles at Night

Here’s a good article written by Mark Douglas about riding your motorcycle at night:

Nightriding
Written by Mark Douglas

DOING IT RIGHT AT NIGHT!!

Knowing how to ride at night will keep you alive, increase time available for enjoying your pride and joy, and enter you into an exhilarating world, normally the domain of the un-dead.
Welcome to the demonic craft of night riding!

Enjoying your bike during daylight hours is a buzz in it’s own right, so when the roads start to clear at the on-set of darkness why does everyone point homewards, succumbing to the fear of the night and all the horrors it holds? Riding at night is naughty…you will become a spectra amongst your friends. Riding at night brings many benefits, not least the training it provides you. Anything learned at night will improve your ability during the day ten-fold.

How do you get involved in night riding? You have probably been out on a Sunday blast, miles from home when the last ray of sunlight bounces off your visor, or you are the kind of rebel who deliberately sets off into the depths of darkness for an all-out thrash along deserted country lanes, unafraid of the ‘other’ prowlers of the night.

MILE HIGH HARLEY-DAVIDSON RECOGNIZED

Mile High Harley-Davidson was awarded Harley-Davidson Motor Company’s 2009 calendar year Bronze Bar & Shield Circle of Achievement Award.  Mile High earned the award based upon their motorcycle and related product sales performance, an evaluation of customer service and satisfaction, and various operational measures.

‘One of the primary reasons the Harley-Davidson brand has such tremendous customer loyalty is because of the efforts of dealers such as Ray Cooper,” said Jeff Merten, Harley-Davidson’s Vice President and General Manager of North American Sales.  “We are very proud to have Ray Cooper as part of the Harley-Davidson family.”

Mile High Harley-Davidson will be celebrating it’s 10th year in business this summer and was the recipient of Harley-Davidson’s Gold Bar and Shield Circle of Achievement Award for 2008.

The Heart Of Your Engine

It has been said that your heads are the heart of your engine.  There are many manufacturers of heads that will sale you a complete set of performance heads or many machine shops that will take your stock heads and make them into a performance set of heads.  The thing to remember about heads is that you are trying to get as much air/fuel charge into your combustion chamber while your intake valve is open and then get rid of the spent gasses when your exhaust valve opens then start all over again the next intake stroke.  The term for this is flow and if either you are buying a set of heads or having yours made from your stock set it is important to know how those heads flow.  When you get your flow chart it is important to see at what lift your heads flow if you are planning on using a set of heads that start to flow good numbers at higher lift or more valve opening and the cams you are planning on using dont ever get close to that lift then you need to rethink what parts  you are using.  The biggest valves and intake ports out there are not allways the way to go velosity plays a part and the big valves at lower lift or valve opening have lower velosity.   So look at the heads you are going to buy and get flow charts on them and make sure the flow  test perameters are the same.  Make sure that heads are being flowed with an intake and exhaust hooked up because you want to compare flow numbers that are somewhat simular to the numbers you are going to achieve while running your engine.

There are many theories on what shape the combustion chamber should be.   The combustion chamber is from the top of the piston at Top Dead Center TDC, the thickness of the head gasket and the design of the actual chamber machined into the heads.  This area makes up the combustion chamber and knowing the volume of this chamber will tell you what your net compression ratio is.  The shape is important because the sparkplug is off center of the chamber and it is important that the flame front of the burning air/fuel mixture can be burned evenlly and totally.  There are bathtub shaped chambers, D shaped chambers,  Hemispherical (Hemi) shaped chambers and so on and so on.  The bathtub design is used in todays big twin engine and works well because the air/fuel mixture has entered the cylinder the intake valve closes as the piston moves up it squishes the air/fuel mixture that is under the narrow side of the bathtub shape and above the piston which creates a even mixing motion that insures a better mixture burn.  As everyone knows the air/fuel mixture in the combustion chamber needs to be burned totally so all the potential power available is delivered to the crank.

There are other things to think about with cylinder heads but my space and time here is limited but I hope this helps with some of your concerns about building the performance engine you are wanting.  Over the years many people have sworn thier engine components work the best but if they dont have the dyno sheets to prove it your money is better spent with proven components.  At Mile High Harley Davidson we have several performance packages to choose from and dyno sheets showing the power improvements.  So please call if you are thinking about having an engine built. – Written by Wayne Jackson
