Air-Conditioning Jacket

Self Cooling JacketYou won’t believe this.

Harley-Davidson has come up with a new self-cooling jacket. How does it work? The all-new interior cooling system is the next best thing to air conditioning – it works by soaking the removable polyacrylate crystal pouches in water, which are located on the chest, upper and lower back. As you are cruising down the highway, wind flows through the jacket, the packs slowly evaporate, releasing cool air for total riding comfort.

The hydration jacket also features pre-curved sleeves with snap-down adjusters and zippered cuffs, adjustable hook-and-loop tabs at waist, two zippered hand-warmer pockets and one inside chest pocket. Simply soak pouches (up to five minutes) to hydrate pouches before placing in jacket. Pouches will last for one year with an average of 50 uses.

Harley-Davidson reports first quarter results

Milwaukee, Wis. (April 17, 2008) - Harley-Davidson, Inc. (NYSE: HOG) today announced its results for the first quarter ended March 30, 2008.  Revenue for the quarter was $1.31 billion compared to $1.18 billion in the year-ago quarter, a 10.8 percent increase.  Net income for the quarter was $187.6 million compared to $192.3 million, a decrease of 2.5 percent compared to the first quarter of 2007.  First quarter diluted earnings per share (EPS) were $0.79, a 6.8 percent increase compared to last year’s $0.74.“With growing weakness in the economy, U.S. retail sales of Harley-Davidson® motorcycles were down 12.8 percent in the first quarter. Although these retail results are disappointing, Harley-Davidson’s U.S. dealers outperformed the heavyweight motorcycle industry, which was down 14.0 percent,” said Jim Ziemer, Chief Executive Officer of Harley-Davidson, Inc.

“We’ve said on a number of occasions that we would closely monitor the retail environment and regularly assess our wholesale shipment plans, and we remain committed to shipping fewer Harley-Davidson motorcycles to our worldwide dealer network than we expect they will sell this year.  In view of U.S. retail trends and uncertainty about the future of the economy, we now plan to ship 23,000 to 27,000 fewer Harley-Davidson motorcycles in 2008 than we shipped in 2007, resulting in total planned 2008 shipments between 303,500 and 307,500 units,” Ziemer said.

“We will achieve the shipment reduction through temporary plant shutdowns and adjustments to daily production rates.  This will result in a decrease of about 370 unionized employees over the next several months.  Our management group and union leaders will work together to implement this reduction.”

“The Company will also be reducing the non-production workforce by about 360 jobs. We believe these actions will better position the Company for a business environment that we expect to continue to be challenging,” Ziemer said.

“Harley-Davidson is fortunate to be dealing with the current economic environment from a position of financial strength.  We are a great company with an exceptionally powerful brand. We are optimistic about our long term business prospects and we will continue to invest in marketing, product development and our international business to drive future growth.”

“For 2008, the Company now expects earnings per share to decrease between 15 and 20 percent compared to 2007 resulting in expected earnings per share of $3.00 to $3.18,” said Ziemer.  This supersedes all previous guidance on earnings per share and other measures.

The Company expects to ship between 76,000 and 80,000 Harley-Davidson motorcycles in the second quarter of 2008.

Legends to Auction 1918 H-D Bicycle

A rare 1918 Harley-Davidson bicycle will be auctioned off along with six motorcycles from the Santa Cruz Harley-Davidson's museum collection at the upcoming Legends of the Motorcycle.

Six motorcycles from the museum collection of the Santa Cruz Harley-Davidson dealership in California have been consigned to the fast approaching auction at Legend of the Motorcycle on May 3rd.

The Harley motorbikes, which have been on view at the dealership’s museum, include: 1929 JDH - at the time, the fastest road bike Harley offered to the public; 1930 VL with sidecar - found in Chile and now beautifully restored; 1941 EL; 1947 WL; 1967 FLH; and 1978 XLH.

Additionally, a rare 1918 Harley-Davidson bicycle will be included in the sale. An anomaly in the Harley line, it was primarily marketed to children and ladies and one can’t help but think the bicycle was created in reaction to the success of Schwinn, the bicycle company whose proprietor also owned the Henderson and Excelsior motorcycle companies.

Although the bicycles were well-made and painted and pin-striped in the same colors as their motorcycle brethren, they were seemingly out of place in most Harley-Davidson dealerships and sales did not meet expectations.

This lady’s bicycle, with its wooden rims, was purchased from its original owner in 1975. The owner was born in 1899 and entered college in 1918. To pay for tuition she hired on with the US Postal Service as a rural route carrier and bought the pedal bike as her source of transportation. It was accessorized with a battery-powered front lamp, and unique to the girl’s model was the front chain guard and the web of string covering the rear wheel spokes. This web of string, which is original, kept the long skirts from getting caught in the wheel. After finishing college, the owner retired the bicycle to her basement where it was stored for over 50 years.

Renowned auctioneers Bonhams & Butterfields will host their second annual auction of important collector motorcycles and memorabilia in conjunction with the upcoming Legend of the Motorcycle Concours d’Elegance on Saturday, May 3rd at the ocean-side Ritz-Carlton in Half Moon Bay, California (just south of San Francisco).

The auction will consist of 100 motorcycles, including the Michael Corbin Collection, bikes previously owned by Steve McQueen and Evel Knievel, and a line-up as diverse as a 1913 Excelsior to a 2007 Ducati “New Blue”. The preview takes place throughout the day from 9:00 am-4:30 pm, and the auction starts at 4:30 in the hotel’s ballroom.

To register to bid - in person or remotely - or to purchase a catalog, please call 415-861-7500. For more information on this seminal auction, go to www.Bonhams.com/Legend.

Harley-Davidson Employees in Wisconsin Approve New Deal

April 8, 2007 — USW-represented workers at Harley-Davidson Inc. factories in Wisconsin have overwhelmingly approved new contracts that raise wages, protect medical benefits and make temporary two-tier wages for skilled craftsmen.

The agreements were ratified by overwhelming margins in April by members of USW Local 2-209, which represents about 1,700 Harley employees in Milwaukee, and USW Local 460 in Tomahawk, Wis., which represents about 360 employees.

A separate agreement covering about 128 members of the International Association of Machinists and Aerospace Workers (IAM) Lodge 78 in the Milwaukee area was also ratified.

The new four-year agreements were retroactive to April 1.

In addition to wage increases, the new contracts include an innovative way to help employees cover health care insurance deductibles and other out-of-pocket expenses.

Each employee will receive a $2,000 annual credit in a health savings program called a Health Reimbursement Arrangement (HRA).

The HRA credits, available to employees through a debit card, can be used for a wide range of medical care costs with the balance rolled over from year to year.

The account balance accrued during working years can be accessed after retirement or a job change. If the employee dies, a spouse or other eligible dependents can use the HRA balance toward reimbursable expenses until they are exhausted.

USW negotiator Steve Brady said the credit should be enough to cover the maximum amount of annual out-of-pocket expenses an employee could be required to pay within a network of health care providers.

“If members and their dependants are able to receive medical care in network, you can use a swipe card and never pay anything out of pocket,” Brady said.

The USW contracts include annual general wage increases for all employee classifications plus one-time boosts of $1 to $1.50 an hour for certain electricians and machinist classifications.

The contracts will also allow newly-hired skilled workers who start work at a lower tier wage than more experienced employees to progress to the top rate over four years.

Casual employees used to cover seasonal work at a parts and accessories warehouse received a rate hike of $6 an hour before the general wage increase, Brady said.

H-D Reminds Riders to Check Helmets

Courtesy of Harley-Davidson

As the motorcycle riding season gets fired up around the country, now is the time to make sure helmets are ready for riding. During April’s “Check Your Helmet Month” and throughout the year, motorcycle enthusiasts are reminded to follow a few simple rules to make sure their helmets are ready for summer riding:

1. Fit is vital - a helmet must fit properly to be effective, and not all helmets fit the same. A good fitting helmet should rest one inch above your eyebrows and shouldn’t roll forward or sideways on your head. To ensure a comfortable fit, wear a helmet for 15 minutes before making a final buying decision.

2. They don’t last forever - manufacturers and the SNELL Foundation recommend helmets be replaced every three to five years, depending on use. Glues, resins and other helmet materials break down over time and can make a helmet less effective. Every new Harley-Davidson helmet comes with a “purchased on date” sticker that can be placed under the comfort liner for a quick reference.

3. Keep it clean - a clean and well cared for helmet will protect better and longer. Use a mild soap to wash the outer shell and internal liners. Never use solvents or chemicals for cleaning as they can destroy protective coatings.

4. Mirrors are not hangers - hanging a helmet on a motorcycle’s mirror can damage the impact absorbing liner inside.

A Helmet Designed for Women
Harley-Davidson recently released the Skyline Helmet, the first and only helmet designed specifically for ladies who love to ride. The Skyline has a deeper cavity to provide a better fit, 3D-type comfort padding with removable and interchangeable pads for a custom fit, a notch for a pony-tail and an anti-static liner to keep hair smooth.

Who to Ask?
Harley-Davidson dealers can work to find the right helmet and fit for every rider. Harley-Davidson carries a range of helmet styles including half, three-quarter, full-face and modular helmets, and dealers can provide even more detail with “The Heads-Up on Helmets” brochure.

In addition to the information provided by MotorClothes Specialists at local dealerships, consumers can visit www.harley-davidson.com for detailed information about helmet styles, components, fit, care and replacement, as well as check out the selection of helmets offered by Harley-Davidson. This information can also be accessed in the Helmet Guide section at www.harley-davidson.com/helmets.

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, the only major U.S.-based motorcycle manufacturer, produces heavyweight motorcycles and a complete line of motorcycle parts, accessories and general merchandise. For more information, visit Harley-Davidson’s Web site at www.harley-davidson.com.

Harley shrine invites faithful

MILWAUKEE —

Harley-Davidson enthusiasts who can’t wait for the motorcycle museum to open in July can sign up now for membership, securing “founding member” status and taking the road to a number of museum perks.

The company this week announced five tiers of museum membership, ranging from a $40-a-year plan for out-of-town guests who want access to the museum’s online content to a $500 annual premier plan that includes a personalized “Living the Legend” rivet displayed on museum grounds.

Museum director Stacey Schiesl said the membership plans are meant to be a new way of reaching out to people interested in Harley-Davidson.

“I think that there are so many different ways to experience Harley-Davidson,” she said. “This is just another way for people to be involved.”

The least-expensive membership plan, dubbed “Open Road,” caters to fans who might not be able to visit Milwaukee but who want access to the museum’s members-only online content.

Schiesl said that content will include thousands of photographs, documents and other Harley material such as desktop backgrounds and screen savers. Open Road members also get one-time free admission to the museum.

Other membership levels offer unlimited visits to the museum. They include:

- “Serial #1,” named for Harley’s first model, which admits one ($60 a year).

- “Two-Up,” motorcycle-speak for riding with a passenger, which admits two ($80 a year).

- “Wrecking Crew,” named for a famous Harley racing team, a family plan for two adults plus children ($125 a year).

- “Hill Climber,” a nod to riders who tackle steep slopes, admits two adults, children and four guests. The top-tier, $500-a-year membership also includes a 3-inch customizable rivet that can be installed on a series of plazas or on a wall on the museum grounds.

Admission for non-members will be $16 for adults; $10 for children 5 and older; $12 for seniors and students; and free for children younger than 5.

The museum has not announced targets for membership enrollment or what date it will open in July.

The membership plans were posted on the museum’s Web site last week, Schiesl said. Rivets already ordered as part of the Hill Climber plan bear messages ranging from, “I rode 2,080 miles to be here,” to husbands and wives “riding together for 50 years,” to tributes to deceased riders.

“We wanted people to be able to tell their story at the museum,” she said. “People will laugh, they’ll cry, they’ll really get into it.”

All members who join this year will receive a “founding member” Harley-Davidson dog tag. Those who join before June 1 will be invited to a preview to get an early look at the museum, Schiesl said.

Other membership perks include faster admission, early looks at exhibits and discounts at the museum’s shop.

Schiesl said people already have expressed interest in membership from all over the United States and overseas, as far away as the Indonesian island of Bali.

“We think our museum is going to be appealing on a global basis,” she said.

The museum also revealed a few items that will be on display: a motorcycle owned by an up-and-coming Elvis Presley; a replica of the Captain America bike from the movie “Easy Rider” (the originals did not survive filming); and “King Kong,” a 13-foot, two-engine motorcycle.

“This is our chance to share our collection with the world,” Schiesl said.

St. Pat’s parades usher in the big day

St. Patrick got his due a day early on Sunday, and the wee ones got their fun.

So despite the damp, gray day, the annual parades in Shawnee and Martin City turned out just fine.

As folks lined Johnson Drive in Shawnee, Harley-Davidson riders roared by and men in kilts strolled along, blaring out, “When the Saints Come Marching In” on their bagpipes. There were old cars, a few floats and girls in cheerleading skirts whose grimaces indicated they wished they were wearing something that covered their bare legs.

Roxann Lee said she has attended the parade every year since she moved to Shawnee in 1999, and wasn’t going to let the weather stop her this time.

“I have to be faithful to my community,” Lee said, with her children by her side.

Nathan, her 7-year-old, said his favorite part of the parade was the go-carts. “And I like the cheerleaders,” said 5-year-old Chelsey, piping up without any prodding.

The Carson children were parked on a blanket near the curb, ready for all the candy that came their way. Four-year-old Chloe seemed to be getting her share, along with 11-year-old twins, Sydney and Catie, and Brooke, 8.

“She’s having a blast,” said her father, Chad Carson.

Organizer Michael Shannon of the Irish American Club, the group putting on the parade, estimated he had about 100 entries this year. That was a few more than last year, he said.

As usual, Shannon said, the first five minutes of the parade were mass confusion. But then everything fell into place.

In Martin City, the event billed as the best little fun parade in Kansas City for St. Patrick may be growing, too.

“It seems bigger than last year,” said parade director Mary Nestel.

Children played on inflatable slides and competed to be a prince or princess for a day before the parade started at 2 p.m. Then about 100 people paraded east from 135th Street and Holmes Road up to Blue Ridge Boulevard.

“All of my kids loved it,” said David DeLallo, 44. “They loved grabbing at the free candy.”

This year — the parade’s 21st — marked the event’s second IrishPalooza, which provided entertainment and food until 6 p.m.

Stacy Ethridge, 23, said the newer events were great additions to a fun tradition.

“It’s really cool for such a small city,” Ethridge said.

A portion of the proceeds from the Martin City event will go to Ozanam, a residential treatment center for children.
