HARLEY-DAVIDSON JOINS BUELL AS FEMMOTO 2007 SPONSOR

Source: www.harley-davidson.com

MILWAUKEE (March 2, 2007) - For the first time at Femmoto, female riders will have the opportunity to demo ride motorcycles on the street as well as the track, and Harley-Davidson is excited to be one of the event sponsors. Buell Motorcycle Company has offered on-track demo rides at Femmoto for the last two years, but this is the first time Harley-Davidson will be involved with the event, held at the Las Vegas Motor Speedway from October 5-7.

For the past five years, manufacturer demo rides at Femmoto were limited to on-track riding. The organizers, Sportbike TrackTime, decided to broaden the scope in 2007 to include street rides. They also changed the format to include a track day on Friday, October 5, for men and women riding their own motorcycles. Saturday and Sunday, October 6-7, will be women-only demo rides on the street and track.

More details on Femmoto activities will be announced in the coming months. For more information and to register for the event, log onto www.femmoto.com. For updates on additional Harley-Davidson and Buell activities at Femmoto, keep an eye on the Women & Motorcycling section of www.harley-davidson.com (under Riders).

Femmoto began in 2001 as a women only track day, but has quickly evolved into much more. Today Femmoto is an organization that looks to fill the void for women motorcycle riders who are looking not only to improve their riding skills with on-track instruction, but who need information, contacts, and specialty services/products. The event also raises money for The Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation "Race For The Cure". A portion of Club Femmoto membership fees go towards this cause along with a donation from the proceeds of the event.

Harley-Davidson Motor Company, the only major U.S.-based motorcycle manufacturer, produces heavyweight motorcycles and a complete line of motorcycle parts, accessories and general merchandise. For more information, visit Harley-Davidson's Web site at www.harley-davidson.com.

2007 HARLEY’S HEROES™ TOUR ROLLS ACROSS AMERICA

America Is the Land of the Free and the Home of the Brave. Harley’s Heroes Honors the Men and Women Who Made it That Way
Source: www.harley-davidson.com

DAYTONA, FL (March 5, 2007) - Thanks to the generosity of a $1 million pledge from the Harley-Davidson Foundation, the Disabled American Veterans (DAV) Mobile Service Offices (MSOs) will soon embark on the 2007 Harley’s Heroes™ Tour. The 2007 tour will include stops throughout the U.S. including over one hundred Harley-Davidson dealerships where benefits assistance will be offered to veterans of all ages in communities where they live.

The mission of the Harley’s Heroes™ Tour is to provide access to benefits for all veterans and show appreciation for their service and sacrifice to our country. While on the 2007 tour, the DAV MSOs will provide benefits counseling to those veterans who suffer from service-connected injuries but may never have filed a claim for benefits or have found it difficult working with the Department of Veterans Affairs.

The 2007 Harley’s Heroes™ Tour will officially kick-off March 5-7 as part of Daytona Bike Week where thousands of motorcycle-loving veterans are drawn to Daytona, Florida. The DAV Mobile Service Office has been designed with Harley’s Heroes™ graphics so Harley riders can easily identify and locate it. It will be based outside the Daytona Convention Center located in the Harley-Davidson demonstration and display area. The MSO will be staffed by highly trained DAV National Service Officers, all of them wartime disabled veterans.

“In the truest sense of our mission to build better lives for disabled veterans and their families, the Harley’s Heroes Tour will enable the DAV to reach a greater number of veterans, better serving them and their families.” said Arthur H. Wilson National Adjutant of the 1.3-million-member DAV. “Many of our youngest veterans are unaware of the benefits they have earned. Informing those veterans of their rights will be the single most important task of the DAV during the 2007 Harley Heroes Tour.”

Many veterans who need the free help the DAV will provide through the 2007 Harley Heroes Tour are among the 1.4 million who have so far fought in Iraq and Afghanistan. According to data released by the VA, 25% of those veterans have already filed claims for benefits.

“The Harley’s Heroes tour will introduce even more veterans to the benefits they are entitled to receive,” said Gail Lione, President of the Harley-Davidson Foundation. “The overwhelming response of Harley-Davidson dealers signing up to participate reflects the commitment our dealers and riders have for the veteran community.”

SCREAMIN’ EAGLE/VANCE & HINES TEAM PREPARES TO DEFEND THIRD CONSECUTIVE NHRA CHAMPIONSHIP

Hines Looking to Break Older Brother's Record
Source: www.harley-davidson.com

Milwaukee (March 5, 2007) - Byron Hines knew things would be different and that made him smile. He stood back and basked in the glow of the 2006 NHRA POWERade Pro Stock Motorcycle championship winner's circle, watching his youngest son claim a third consecutive NHRA title. He knew then things would be different and that was exactly what he was aiming for.

His older son, three-time NHRA Pro Stock Motorcycle champion Matt Hines, had helped make the tuning decisions throughout the grueling 2006 POWERade season. His youngest son Andrew, having earned his third championship after the team conquered several hurdles, has learned some valuable lessons. The eldest Hines expects those lessons to help guide the Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines V-Rod team in 2007.

"I think the third championship is going to temper Andrew and make him better able to use his skills as a rider when dealing with pressure," Byron Hines said. "We started the season and it wasn't a rosy beginning. We were 0-4 in the win column to start the season and just watched the Suzukis win rounds and races. But the entire team came back and that is no doubt going to help Andrew because now he knows that no matter what the situation is, a good mental state of mind can help his riding and help him deal with pressure. Matt was a great motivator in 2006 and I expect that to continue in '07."

Hines earned three wins in five final rounds in 2006 along with two No. 1 qualifying positions. He also added to his streak of consecutive races that he's qualified for – which now stands at 56 events.

Even with three titles, eight career wins and 19 No. 1 qualifying awards to his name, Hines is determined to make some improvements in '07.

"I need to win more rounds and improve the consistency of my riding and that includes all the aspects that go into one run," Hines said. "I need to work on the entire run from the starting line to the finish line. There is room to improve everything from my reaction time to hitting all the shift points with accuracy.

"When the 2006 season opened and we were behind the rest of the field in performance, I was thrown for a loop. But I learned a lot from the entire experience and we ended the season very well. I think that will help us roll into the start of the new season and I really think we're going to come out firing in 2007."

He will also have to learn to be a teacher as well. Eddie Krawiec was added to the Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team in early February. Krawiec had been to just eight NHRA national events in his career before joining the championship-winning team.

"This is going to be the kind of season where I need to be more focused than ever," Hines said. "We are going to work with Eddie to make sure the transition from part-time racer to being our teammate is smooth, but we also have a championship to defend. Luckily, we have the best team and the best sponsor in the NHRA to make sure we can accomplish all of our goals."

While Krawiec wants to jump into the competition fire and try to race for NHRA event wins, Hines will be going after history. Matt Hines (1997-'99) and Angelle Sampey (2000-'02) were previously the only riders in NHRA history to win three consecutive titles. No one has won four consecutive titles yet.

"We have a relatively new rider in Eddie and we are going to let the team mold him into a very good, competitive racer," Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said. "We also want to do whatever we can to compete for another championship. No one has ever won four consecutive titles in Pro Stock Motorcycle history and we know what a big challenge that is.

"Every year that our team has won an NHRA championship we have faced some type of adversity. We've been through rules changes, equipment struggles and a few other things but this group has always been able to overcome them. Going for a fourth title means that we have to reach down even deeper to go after such a big goal."

Hines has a pretty good idea about what it will take to compete for a record-breaking title.

"It's simple, I need to win more rounds," Hines said. "If we focus on qualifying well and winning rounds, that will lead to race wins. We just need to work on our program and not worry about anyone else."

Paluso knows that if anyone can make a fourth championship happen, it's Hines.

"Every rider has room for improvement," she said. "But the fact that Andrew has youth on his side just helps him. He is so young and he has the desire to become a more consistent racer and that says a lot about his commitment to being a champion. He also has a great team behind him to make all the right changes to be even more competitive."

If going after a fourth championship wasn't exciting enough, the NHRA has made a drastic change to its point system as well. Now riders will have to race well in the first half of the season just to earn the right to be in the championship chase by the end of August. The season is now broken down into three parts.

All riders will have 10 events to get into the top eight in the point standings, before the points are readjusted. Then those eight riders will have three races to get into the top four of the standings before the points are readjusted again. Those top four riders will be allowed to compete for the ultimate championship title with just two events remaining in the Pro Stock Motorcycle season.

"The new points structure is gong to make it very interesting," Hines said. "The class is already so competitive and I think we're going to see some more teams stepping up and adding to the competition. I think that is going to force us to focus more which is always a good thing."

Byron Hines said the team already knew what to focus on long before the 2007 season started.

"We need to refine our package a bit this season," Hines said. "We need to minimize breakage, mistakes and all of the things you can manage. That will give our riders more confidence and allow them to perform better. That's not different from any other season, we always approach the season that way. Our goal is always to improve on the previous year."

COOLBETH WILL OPEN '07 RACING SEASON WITH A BULL'S-EYE ON HIS SCREAMIN' EAGLE RACING LEATHERS

COOLBETH WILL OPEN '07 RACING SEASON WITH A BULL'S-EYE ON HIS SCREAMIN' EAGLE RACING LEATHERS

Milwaukee (March 5, 2007) - Kenny Coolbeth and the rest of the AMA Ford Quality Checked Flat Track GNC Twins racers competed at 10 events in 2006. Coolbeth was the points leader just once – but it happened to be the only time it really mattered.

Coolbeth took over the points lead at the season finale in Columbus, Ohio after winning the race on his Screamin' Eagle Harley-Davidson. It was his first career AMA Twins championship and the first championship in nine years for a Harley-Davidson factory-sponsored team.

Now he has a new perspective about what it will take to be just as competitive in 2007.

"I know that I have a big bull's-eye on my back this season and I want to do whatever it takes to keep the No. 1 plate," said the Warren, Conn., native. "My goal is to win races and do the same thing I did in 2006 but I won't put any extra pressure on myself. I'm going to approach the season and each race the same way I always do. Having a different number on my motorcycle isn't going to change the way I ride. I go to each event knowing I'm going to do my best and go after every win possible."

Coolbeth earned three wins and three other podium finishes in 2006. The Wrecking Crew team earned a total of five wins and 17 podium appearances. The 2007 Wrecking Crew is out to increase those numbers.

Along with the factory-sponsored Coolbeth, the Wrecking Crew will feature Jared Mees on the Blue Springs Harley-Davidson, Bryan Smith on the Moroney's Harley-Davidson and the newest member of the team, Joe Kopp on his Team Latus Harley-Davidson.

Mees, Smith and Kopp each earned a victory in '06 and Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said Kopp will just add to the competitive power of the Wrecking Crew. Mees took second place in the final point standings while Smith and Kopp earned third and sixth place, respectively.

"We're really excited to have Joe on the Wrecking Crew because he's got experience and he's just as excited to be part of our team," Paluso said. "I think we're coming back stronger this season and Joe is one of the reasons for that. We're going to defend our championship along with second and third place from Jared and Bryan so we have a lot to live up to."

This will also be the first year that the Wrecking Crew has three dealer-sponsored teams.

"The Wrecking Crew was originally founded on a working relationship between dealers and racers," Paluso said. "We're lucky to have three successful Harley-Davidson dealers as our partners this season. Blue Springs came on board with Jared to be his sponsor, Moroney's is back with Bryan and George Latus and his group has a great relationship with Joe. We have a great group of riders and sponsors and they are all working hard to make sure 2007 is just as, if not more, successful than 2006."

Mees will be defending his 2006 win in Saluda, Va., and will look to be in the running for the 2007 championship.

"Our communication as a team was great last year," Mees said. "I trust the guy turning the wrenches on the bike so much. We have great chemistry on the team and I'm really excited about what we can do with the knowledge we gained last year. Hopefully we can build on what we learned last season and make an even bigger push for the championship title."

Smith will be defending a big win from the second Springfield Mile event of the '06 season.

"I'm anxious for the season because we had a couple of things that happened that were more bad luck than anything else and we are doing whatever it takes to minimize the chances of those things happening again," Smith said. "I think I'm more excited about this season than I've ever been. We were in the championship chase and we didn't even come close to reaching our potential last year. I think our setup and results will just improve."

Kopp won the Greenville, Ohio, race in '06 and is looking to improve on his 6th place finish in the final standings.

"I'm aiming to win three times this season," Kopp said. "That's a tough goal to attain because the competition is so good and it's difficult to win one race, let alone three. But I think our team's consistency will help us. I think the team that makes mistakes won't be in the championship chase this season. One bad race could be the difference between being in the top five and being in 10th place. My team is ready to battle for wins and hopefully that will get us in championship contention by the end of the season."

Paluso said she expects nothing less than an exciting season from the entire Wrecking Crew team.

"I expect Kenny to go out and ride with the same passion and dedication that he showed in 2006," she said. "Kenny wants to defend the championship and he's got great competition from the field and that includes the rest of the Wrecking Crew. We want to see as many podium finishes as possible from all four riders.

"Last year the guys learned what it was like to work as a team and it paid off. Joe will help the younger riders with his experience and knowledge. Bryan and Jared were not only part of the championship chase but they also got to see what Kenny did to win the championship and because of that, I think everyone will have a more competitive season in 2007."

Coolbeth is just going to concentrate on one thing: winning.

"From the start of practice to every lap of the main event I am going to stay focused," Coolbeth said. "I'm still learning and I think there is so much that I can learn from communicating with mechanics to preparing for each race. Everyone on the team is a top contender. It's going to be a tough season but I'm ready. I can't wait for every race."

The couple, Bruno Accart and Leila Bettioui from Dunkirk, France, are both avid riders and each own a Harley-Davidson motorcycle. For the wedding, Harley-Davidson provided a cake, a translator, as well as an escort for the lovely bride. Steve Piehl, director of consumer events, walked Leila down the aisle.

Willie G. Davidson, senior vice president and chief styling officer, spoke at the American Motorcyclist Association’s Motorcycle Hall of Fame Museum annual fundraising breakfast on Friday, March 9, at the Hilton Daytona Beach Oceanfront Resort. The new movie “Wild Hogs,” was the number one movie at the box office opening weekend of Daytona, and it was also Walt Disney Co’s biggest March opening ever, as well as the largest-ever debut for John Travolta, who rode a Harley-Davidson Screamin’ Eagle Fat Boy in the movie. Travolta’s Fat Boy, along with some of his Harley-Davidson MotorClothes he wore in the movie, were on display in the Ocean Center while clips and outtakes played in the background. Visitors even got the chance to sit on the bike and get their picture taken.

Harley-Davidson MotorClothes product specialists presented four daily seminars on helmet fit and function in the Harley-Davidson demo area at Daytona International Speedway. During each 15-minute seminar, participants had the chance to win a new Harley-Davidson MotorClothes helmet by filling out a customer information card. KRAWIEC MAKES SEMIFINAL ROUND APPEARANCE IN CAREER FIRST NHRA POWERADE ELIMINATIONS
Hines Takes Loss in Stride Knowing There is Room to Improve
Source: www.harley-davidson.com

GAINESVILLE, Fla. (March 20, 2007) - The Screamin' Eagle/Vance & Hines Harley-Davidson team can breathe a little easier on race days from now on.

Not only does the team have three-time NHRA POWERade champion Andrew Hines on their side, but the new guy's not bad either.

Eddie Krawiec, an Englishtown, N.J., resident and native, not only qualified for his first NHRA national event, but he went rounds too. The newest member of the Screamin' Eagle group made the most of his first weekend on the team.

Krawiec earned two round wins Sunday at the ACDelco NHRA Gatornationals at Gainesville Raceway. Krawiec beat Paul Gast in the opening round of eliminations with a 7.150-second pass at 180.24 mph after Gast fouled at the starting line. In Round Two Krawiec beat Matt Guidera with a 7.243 at 175.46 over Guidera's 7.620 at 140.09 on his Rocklin Harley-Davidson Buell.

Krawiec lost in the semifinals. Matt Smith recorded a 6.921 run at 190.22 on his Torco Racing Fuels Buell to cover Krawiec's 7.058 at 187.83.

"I could not have asked for anything more this weekend," Krawiec said. "My goals coming into the season opener were to qualify well and win one round. Going to the semifinals in my debut with the team is incredible. The crew made it possible."

Krawiec said the team made everything look easy this weekend.

"We had to do a lot of maintenance on the bike between the first and second round and they made it look routine," Krawiec said. "It stressed me out a little bit because I had not been in that position before, but the teamwork here just helped me get ready for the round. Knowing (team owner) Byron Hines and (crew chief) Matt Hines were working on the bike just gave me confidence as we went along. I would have never been in the semifinals without those guys standing behind me and supporting me."

Harley-Davidson Racing Manager Anne Paluso said she was impressed with the way the team made a new rider look like he'd been there before.

"It was a great season and career-opening event for Eddie," Paluso said. "The team had multiple challenges thrown at them this weekend and they responded very well. Eddie was in the semifinals of his first event and ran consistently well in qualifying."

Before Saturday Krawiec's career-best elapsed time on a Pro Stock Motorcycle was a 7.254 pass at 186.02. That was before Krawiec turned in a 6.948 pass at 191.02 in qualifying to improve those career-best numbers and earn in the No. 7 spot for eliminations.

Hines was No. 8 after qualifying wrapped up after recording a 6.955 at 192.17 on Saturday but he lost in the first round on Sunday. The Screamin' Eagle V-Rod got off the line well before suffering problems at mid-track for a 10.682 pass at 75.02 in a losing effort against Shawn Gann's 7.009 at 189.28 on his Race Girl Suzuki.

"I had one of the best 60-foot times in my career before the run went badly," Hines said. "But I think we figured out which direction we need to go in. We've struggled with our launches in the past but now that the bikes are more consistent, we can learn how to tune from them and continue to make improvements."

Hines has eight career wins including a 2004 victory at Gainesville Raceway. He's still glad the weekend is over and the team can focus on the next event.

"I'm happy we have the first one out of the way," Hines said. "The first one always seems to be the toughest. I can't wait to roll into Houston and start all over again.

"We're going back to the shop and rebuild the engines and make some spare parts. We have our work cut out for us, but we're fortunate to be able to make it all in our shop. Our machinists will be hard at work to make sure we're ready."

Andrew Hines weekend results:

Q1: 7.676 seconds at 137.06 mph
Q2: 7.014 at 191.59
Q3: 6.975 at 193.10
Q4: 6.955 at 192.17

R1: 10.682 at 75.02

Eddie Krawiec weekend results:

Q1: 7.042 seconds at 189.04 mph
Q2: 7.015 at 190.65
Q3: 6.948 at 191.02
Q4: 6.988 at 191.32

R1: 7.150 at 180.24

The name alone conjures up images of fabulous motorcycles, roaring engines and the rubbernecking of hundreds as the cool bikes zoom along the highway.

Now, Harley-Davidson has ventured into food.

Harley-Davidson has teamed up with ConAgra Foods to create Harley-Davidson Beef Jerky. It's the first food product from Harley-Davidson.

The jerky is available in grocery stores, convenience stores and at about 1,300 Harley-Davidson dealers around the country, including the dealership at 4710 S. Kings Highway in Myrtle Beach.

The manufacturer's suggested retail price is $5.99 for a 3.25-ounce package of jerky.

City courting Harleys

Tuesday, March 27, 2007 | By JOHN KOZIOL | Citizen

Pamplona has the running of the bulls; Laconia may have the running of the Hogs under a proposal that would see Harley-Davidson set up shop in the city hall parking lot during this year's Bike Week.

Mayor Matt Lahey on Monday told the City Council that he, City Manager Eileen Cabanel and several councilors have been meeting with Harley officials for months and he wanted to send a powerful message back to the motorcycle manufacturer from the full council that it was very welcome.

Lahey got that endorsement in the form of a unanimous consensus vote that H-D can and will take over the city hall lot from Monday, June 11, through Sunday, June 17, filling it with a display of bikes and exhibits showcasing Harley history. Riders will be able to take some of the display bikes on 10- to 12-mile demo rides. There will be no food vendors or beer tent, however.

The deal is nearly 100 percent done, Lahey added after the council meeting, with H-D understanding that it has the larger number of things on its to-do list to make the appearance in downtown Laconia happen.

No money is exchanging hands for Harley's use of the city lot but the company is picking up the cost of all municipal services as well as electricity.

While it's possible that Harley, which in recent years has made the New Hampshire International Speedway its Bike Week home, may pay the city a fee in the future, Lahey said the hope this year is that the cachet of the Harley name will provide an indirect financial benefit by drawing visitors to the downtown who in turn will patronize area businesses.

"Harley-Davidson saw what we have to offer downtown," Lahey told the council in explaining H-D's decision to leave NHIS.

Harley wanted to use the city hall lot right from the start of the discussions, but the municipal lot between Main and Pleasant streets was also considered before being deemed inadequate for Harley's needs, said Lahey.

The downside to H-D coming to the downtown is that the entire, 200-space lot north of city hall will be out of commission for seven days; the parking to the south of city hall will not be affected.

Lahey expressed confidence that there are other sites in the downtown that could temporarily accommodate the loss of parking at city hall, including the parking garage at the Laconia Mall and at the former F.W. Webb property on Union Avenue.

The new owner of that property, with whom Lahey recently spoke, has said the city can use 70 parking spaces on his lot. Lahey envisioned city workers parking their vehicles there and taking the nearby footbridge over the Winnipesaukee River to get to City Hall.

Cabanel said the Laconia Main Street program, which is working to revitalize the downtown, was unhappy that the City Hall lot was chosen over the Pleasant-Main one.

Ward 6 Councilor Armand Bolduc said he didn't understand why Laconia Main Street felt the way it did, adding, " I think we can find parking for them."

Bob Hamel, who represents Ward 5 and who with other members of the council's Finance Committee has been taking a close look at all things Bike Week since being elected, called Harley-Davidson "a very highly looked-at organization" and "a good addition to the downtown."

TRIED `N' TESTED; HARLEY WATERPROOFS
26 March 2007 | Inside Bikes News

These cool looking, orange and black waterproofs offer a distinctive look for any Hog ridin' biker, male or female.

They are made of ballistic nylon, have re-inforced zips and seams, and feature the Harley logo on the leg of the trousers and across the shoulders of the jacket.

They come ready to hit the highway, with a bespoke carrying bag, which is so compact it will fit easily inside a sporting sized pannier, or in a small tankbag.

Durable, lightweight and functional, the Harley waterproofs were tested for insidebikes.com by Anne Elsender, who spent a long weekend in Ireland for Carole Nash's CN magazine ( out later in 2007 ).

She rated them highly for water resistance and comfort;

`They are easy to get on and off, with long zips so that the trouser legs can open completely, ' said Anne, `and as I wear leathers that means less fuss jigging about at the roadside when the showers hit you - you can get the waterproofs on really quickly.

I also like the bold colours, as I think dozy drivers always tend to see bright colours a bit quicker. All good news for me, so bring on the European tour this summer baby!'

The Harley waterproof jacket retails for £125.76 and the matching trousers cost £75.44, available from Manchester Harley-Davidson in Stockport, plus all other UK Harley dealers.

How We Roll: Riders' Edge

Thursday Mar 22 | WTSP-TV Saint Petersburg

Brandon, Florida – “Go ahead and fire ‘em up!” yells Ed Lombard, coach of Harley Davidson of Brandon’s “Riders’ Edge” program. It’s a motorcycle class … with a softer side.

“Push them around until you’re facing the other direction, like motorcycle ballet,” Lombard directs his small class of students on a rainy Friday morning.

The Harley Davidson-sponsored course is for anyone interested in learning motorcycle safety.

Lombard says nearly half of the bikers-to-be that sign up are women.

Ed Lombard, Riders’ Edge coach: “We just had a class last weekend where we had two men out of twelve. We've also had classes where we've had completely nothing but women. So it’s an increasing number, that's for sure.”

Riders’ Edge student Samantha Ritson is no stranger to bikes.

Samantha Ritson, Riders’ Edge student: “My whole life I always rode with my Dad, and ever since then wanted to be on bikes.”

Sam says moving from the back of the bike to the driver's seat is empowering.

Ritson: "You ride on the back for so long, and then you're in complete control of that bike on your own. You don't have anyone else telling you how to ride it. You just do it on your own."

The independence of being in control of the bike also appeals to Andrea Kemp, who admits there's a learning curve when it comes to taking the helm.

Andrea Kemp, Riders’ Edge student: "The whole experience was like I had no idea because I only rode as a passenger for so long and actually getting on and doing it was (shrugs) I don’t know, weird (laughs)."

But now that she's gotten the hang of it, this licensed motorcyclist is ready to hit the road ... and join the growing population of Harley honeys.

Kemp: "It is fun and you don't see a lot of women out there, so I want to be one of those women that are out there riding."

Riders’ Edge students are eligible for their motorcycle license after completing the four-day-long class. Starting in 2008, a safety class like Riders’ Edge will be required for anyone obtaining a motorcycle license in Florida.

Riders’ Edge is held every weekend, and costs about $300 for the beginners’ class. For more information, click on the link to the left of this story.

Beginner Or Re-entry Motorcycle Rider?

Tuesday Mar 20 | Bellaonline.com | Nancy Brotherton, BellaOnline's Motorcycles Editor

This article discusses proper rider training and how to get it. Before I begin, let me share with you a glimpse of my motorcycling background. I have owned a 250 Honda Elsinor racing bike, a 175 Yamaha street bike, and a 1969 Triumph Bonneville bike. I had never taken a formal riding course but rather was self taught with tips from friends. Twenty years had passed when I decided to purchase a 2006 Harley Heritage Classic, a real beauty. I was sure that this would be no different than my other bikes. Sister, was I wrong!

The first time I got on the bike and prepared to ride, I was petrified. This bike was one heavy, magnificent piece of motorcycling machinery, not at all like the smaller bikes of my youth. I knew I needed to take a rider's course to get the most out of my new machine and vice-versa. I enrolled in both a private and a Motorcycle Safety Foundation training course. I learned that in all the years I had been riding, I wasn't doing it as well as I could have been. I guess they can teach an old dog new tricks!

Get the proper training and techniques needed to operate a motorcycle. Learning to ride a motorcycle properly doesn't mean having your best friend provide the training. I strongly recommend taking a state certified motorcycle safety course, such as the Basic Rider Course provided by the Motorcycle Safety Foundation (MSF). The Basic Rider course is suitable for beginning riders or re-entry riders. You don't have to own a motorcycle to take this training because the MSF provides a motorcycle and proper safety gear. One benefit of the MSF training is that you will be training with others that are beginners and learning riding techniques that even the most road-hardened riders may not know.

The MSF training also provides instruction in riding etiquette, riding gear, and differences in styles of motorcycles. The biggest benefit for me was the boost of confidence I got when I passed the course. Typically when you pass the MSF course, you receive a certificate to receive your state motorcycle license without having to take the "formal" exam. You will need to check with your state to determine if this is the case. Also, some insurance companies will give you a discount on your motorcycle insurance when you complete the course. Information can be obtained about MSF training by visiting the link below or by calling (800)-446-9227.

Private instructors offer individualized training. Most private instructors provide a motorcycle for training and taking the State exam. Some dealerships provide training through their sponsors, such as RidersEdge sponsored by Harley-Davidson and Buell or Honda's Rider Education Courses.

Both private instruction and MSF instruction were excellent. I preferred the MSF course because it didn't just teach me how to pass the State license exam, it provides real life road skills that can literally save your skin. I also made some new friends who encouraged me throughout the course because we were all in this together.

Until the next article, keep your eyes on the road and your hand on the throttle for my second article that discusses Motorcycle Helmets, a very controversial topic.

John Travolta Donates Harley To Auction

Tuesday Mar 20 | Glitterati

John Travolta has decided to auction off an autographed, custom made Harley-Davidson, leather jacket and helmet to help raise funds to restore the old landmark Marion Theatre in Ocala, Florida.

Travolta and his wife, actress Kelly Preston, own a home near Ocala and attended a premiere for the movie, "Wild Hogs" in the Florida city on March 2nd, driving down the red carpet on the custom made bike modeled after one in the film.

Travolta autographed the bike, leather jacket and the helmet, which will all be auctioned off at a benefit dinner in May. Funds raised by the auction will support the Marion Theatre renovation project and the Ocala Film Commission.

Cops get new rides

Saturday Mar 17 | Cnjonline.com

They’re taking to the streets of Clovis on two wheels instead of four, but more isn’t always better, according to police officers who say their new Harley-Davidson patrol units will offer advantages over patrol cars.

Better maneuverability, the ability to work in crowds at events and greater public visibility are just a few of the benefits afforded them through the use of motorcycles, according to Clovis Police Lt. Richard Johnson, who oversees the police department’s uniform services, including the traffic division.

Thursday, Johnson conducted patrol on one of two newly purchased police edition Electra Glides to put it through its paces, he said.

He said people definitely noticed the bike, its pristine white paint still awaiting stripes.

“They’re really responsive,” the 12-year police veteran said. “They like the idea, and of course they’re very nice vehicles.”

Several officers within the department, Johnson included, are qualified to ride, holding motorcycle endorsements and police level certification. Currently, one officer has been selected for motorcycle patrol and another will be assigned within a couple weeks. They will be the primary operators of the bikes.

With the exception of days made impractical for riding by inclement weather, the goal is for the bikes to be used as much as possible.

“We do expect a majority of their time will be on the bikes. We want those motorcycles to be seen. … The public can expect to see one or both of them at any time,” he said.

Beyond traffic patrol, the department plans to utilize the motorcycles for a variety of other purposes.

“(We provide) funeral escorts as a courtesy and a respect. The motorcycles are very effective in that (scenario),” Johnson said, explaining the department is also called upon to escort parades and be present at other events where use of the motorcycles is in many cases the most practical machine for the job.

The police package deviates from a standard Harley-Davidson Electra Glide by virtue of lights and sirens, radio communications and anti-lock brakes. The department also had a digital camera system added for increased documentation of traffic stops and incident responses, Johnson explained.

Purchased from a Santa Fe Harley-Davidson dealer under state contract, the motorcycles will be maintained locally by High Plains Harley-Davidson. BMW models were considered but the department ruled in favor of the Harleys because of local access to service that would avoid shipping the bikes out of town for maintenance, Capt. Patrick Whitney said.

It isn’t the first time Clovis has had a motorcycle unit, Whitney said, explaining the department’s motorcycles had to be returned to Harley-Davidson a few years ago when lease costs rose. In the interim, the department has been pursuing ways to revive the unit and recently combined grant monies and department allocations to bring them back online.

A valuable asset, motorcycles enhance police effectiveness in urban settings on multiple levels, Whitney said.

“They really stand out. They are (great) for escort (duties), and those bikes can go places cars can’t.”

Randy Rhue, High Plains Harley-Davidson business manager, said Clovis has a strong motorcycle community, and it is good to see motorcycle patrols brought back into the area.

A retired state police officer, Rhue can see things as a motorcycle rider and through the eyes of law enforcement.

“It shows that the police aren’t afraid to get out there and ride motorcycles like the public, (and) it makes the officer more approachable by the general public. The officer himself is more visible to the public, (and) it’s a great icebreaker with young people,” he said.
